What’s an Enzyme?

The main powerhouses behind this cleaner are a group of enzymes, which are proteins that help catalyze, or even actuate, chemical reactions in certain systems.

In layman’s terms, an enzyme is a protein that causes or helps along a chemical reaction. Enzymes can be used for a wide range of applications. For instance, the stomach has enzymes that help break down and digest food.

In this capacity as a cleaner, these enzymes are selected specifically for their ability to go after the organic compounds that create odors or result in dirt buildup or stains. In some cases, the enzymes can even directly target and kill microbes.

That is, like conventional cleaners they can reduce  germs; but they can also completely break down and remove the compounds that cause unpleasant stains and odors, eliminating them at the root, and without the need for synthetic fragrances.

What Makes This EC3 Enzyme Cleaner Special?

To illustrate why our EC3 Enzyme Cleaner is so effective, we’re going to break it out by ingredient:

• Protease: This powerful enzyme denatures (breaks down) proteins found in compounds like blood, urine, grass, food, vomit, and other organic materials. It breaks them down into shorter amino acid chains which are less chemically stubborn and therefore easier to remove.
• Cellulase: Cellulase attacks cellulose, a compound common in many plant tissues. Cellulose is therefore common in plant-based foods, as well as in grass and leaves that can both leave stains.
• Amylase: If you have starchy or starch-based stains, amylase is the enzyme you need. It breaks down complex carbohydrates like starches into simpler compounds that are easier to remove.
• Lipase: Arguably the most important enzyme in this entire blend, lipase breaks down lipid molecules into smaller compounds that are easier to remove. That is, fats and oils. This is the enzyme that does the heavy lifting to remove the fat grease, and oil-based stains, which are often the most difficult, by far, to remove.

Taken together, these enzymes weaken the chemical structure of the compounds that constitute stains and odors, making it much easier to remove them completely.

On top of this, these enzymes, specifically cellulase and protease, can kill certain microbes by destroying the integrity of some species cell walls. These enzymes may also be effective at killing or controlling Candida and black mold.

Beyond these enzymes, this cleaner has also been formulated to contain a rich concentration of citrus seed extracts along with lemon and mint oil.

As we have covered in our blog in the past, citrus seed extracts can play a valuable role in mold control. As it turns out, lemon oil and mint oil are also powerful antimicrobial agents.

Lemon oil doesn’t just smell nice. It is also highly effective at inhibiting the growth of common pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The same goes for mint.

Top Uses of This EC3 Enzyme Cleaner

This EC3 Enzyme Cleaner is highly effective as a general cleaner and stain remover, and a little bit goes a long way - the bottle at the previous link is concentrated and can make multiple gallons of cleaning solution.

This multi-purpose, multi-surface cleaner can be used on most surfaces and finishes (just be cautious about using it on wood as the cellulase in it can damage raw wood), and will lift odor and stains.

It is a deodorizer, can be used on food-safe/food-grade surfaces, and lifts and removes dirt with amazing facility. You can even use it to remove soap scum. In fact, with some cleaners, soap dilutes or damages them; not this one.

This enzyme cleaner is so soap-resistant that you can spray it on grout as a grout cleaner, and every time you wet the surface you will reactivate the enzymes in it, so it will continue cleaning and lifting dirt long after you apply it.

You can even use it as a laundry additive or a complete detergent, just be sure to follow the directions carefully.

One unique use of this enzyme cleaner, in this capacity, is to “strip” clothing, sheets and other fabrics that have become yellowed. This cleaner will remove all those oils and stains that are causing the odors and yellowing, restoring the fabric to near-pristine condition.
