What Is N-Acetyl Cysteine?
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is an amino acid that boosts antioxidant function and is a source of the conditionally essential amino acid L-cysteine. It has also been found to raise glutathione levels in the body. Maintaining adequate glutathione levels is important to maintaining the health of the respiratory, hepatic, and immune systems. NAC is also important in supporting antioxidant protection of fats and proteins and supporting the normal response to inflammation.
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is an amino acid that boosts antioxidant function and is commonly used as an agent to help clear sinus and airway congestion caused by mucus overproduction. NAC is a source of the conditionally essential amino acid L-cysteine and is a precursor to the tripeptide glutathione, an essential intracellular antioxidant, and therefore supports antioxidant and cellular detoxification pathways in the body. In addition, a growing body of research also highlights the role of NAC in supporting neuropsychiatric health. Each capsule of N-Acetyl Cysteine provides 500 mg of this versatile amino acid.
What Is N-Acetyl Cysteine Used for?
Also known as NAC, N-acetyl cysteine, supplemental NAC has many uses, and may have potential benefits with respect to liver protection, respiratory health and clearance from mucus blockage, angina (chest pain), and swelling in the lungs. It is also possible that n-acetyl cysteine may be effective for controlling cholesterol and other lipids in the blood, treating flu symptoms, and some even say that it may have anticancer properties.
Is N-Acetyl Cysteine and Antioxidant?
Yes, n-acetyl cysteine is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that is derived from the amino acid cysteine. NAC is a strong glutathione precursor.It reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS), which play a role in vascular dysfunction and ischemia.
How Can I Take N-Acetyl Cysteine?
There are many ways to take n-acetyl cysteine; in addition to the NAC dietary supplement we sell here, other forms, such as nasal sprays, are available, which are used for their mucolytic (mucous-combating) properties.
When’s the Best Time to Take It?
When taken as part of a daily dietary supplement it is best taken once per day or otherwise as directed by your health care provider. Some also claim that n-acetyl cysteine is best absorbed by an empty stomach, so if you can, it may benefit you to take it earlier in the day before you have eaten anything.
Is N-Acetyl Cysteine Good for the Lungs or Liver?
Because of its mucolytic properties, there are some claims that n-acetyl cysteine is good for overall lung health. It can improve mucus clearance and lower inflammation which can help COPD/chronic bronchitis symptoms. Also, because it is sometimes administered for acetaminophen poisoning, it may be beneficial to the liver. Evidence also shows NAC supports liver detoxification by boosting glutathione.
